What does it mean to live an abundant life? In our culture today our view of an abundant life has somewhat been construed. We believe that a life of abundance is having the biggest house, the fastest car, and the largest bank account. Maybe it’s because of what we’ve seen on “MTV’s Cribs” or because of the houses on Hollywood Blvd. Maybe it’s because of the reality TV shows or the next blockbuster movie that comes out. Whatever the reason is, we have a false sense of what it means to live life abundantly.
Jesus says in John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” The thief that Jesus is referring to here, I believe, is this false image of the abundant life. Chasing after it will only steal what God has blessed you with, kill your dreams, and destroy your purpose in life. Jesus, and only Jesus, restores the blessings that have been stolen from you, brings life to those dreams that have died, and creates purpose in life. Abundance in life comes from having Jesus. If you don’t have Him, you will keep finding death and destruction in life.
If you were to ask anyone who has gotten the biggest house, fastest car, or largest bank account, they will tell you that it doesn’t satisfy and they are always finding themselves striving for more. But if you ask anyone who has made Jesus Lord of their life, they will tell you that they are blessed beyond anything they could have ever asked or imagined. A life apart from Jesus will always leave you in lack, but a life with Jesus as the center is full of abundance.
