Overcome Day 6: Wolves Dressed Like Sheep
Read: Matthew 6:5-8 and Matthew 7:15-23
We live in a world where nothing is real anymore. Everything is fake. Our so called “Reality TV” shows are fake. The movies we watch give a false sense of reality. The people on our magazine covers are fake. Everywhere we go, everywhere we look, and everywhere we turn people are masquerading around with their false personas. Nobody can be real. Nobody can be transparent. Nobody can let down their guard anymore.
Jesus warns us in Matthew 7 to watch out for people who masquerade around as someone else. To keep an eye out for the people who are someone else on the outside but someone totally different on the inside. In other words, Jesus is saying “Don’t be like them. Don’t try to be someone you’re not. Be yourself.”
In a world where everything around you is fake, be real. Be yourself. Don’t try to fit in. Stand out. The Psalmist, David, writes “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” (See Psalms 139:14) In other words, you are perfect just the way God made you. You are unique. You are one of a kind. There is no one else just like you. You don’t have to try and change. You don’t have to be someone you’re not. You don’t have to try and meet the mold that the world says you are supposed to fit into.
Jesus loves you just the way you are. He died for you knowing exactly who you were going to be. He knew the decisions that you were going to make. He knew the mistakes you were going to make. He knew everything that you were going to go through. And that didn’t matter to Him. He still created you. He still died for you. And He still loves you. Not for the person who you were eventually going to be someday, but for who you are.
Are you trying to be someone you’re not? Are you trying to fit in or are you trying to stand out? Are you resting in the truth that Jesus loves you just the way you are?
