Have you ever been in the presence of a celebrity, a professional athlete, or someone famous and didn’t know it? Yesterday Perry Noble, Senior Pastor of NewSpring Church, talked about how he was on a plane, sitting right behind Floyd Mayweather, and he didn’t even know it. He used this illustration to point out that sometimes we can be in the presence of God and don’t know it. Why is that? How can we be standing in the presence of almighty, all-powerful, all-knowing God and not know it?
The answer is because most of the time we don’t recognize God when He shows up. Just like Perry Noble didn’t know he was sitting behind Floyd Mayweather because he didn’t recognize him, we do the same thing with God. Jesus pointed this very truth out in Matthew 25 when He said:
“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”(Matthew 25:34-40 NIV)
We expect God to show up in a building, in brick and mortar; but God doesn’t dwell in something made by man, God lives inside of people. So many times we miss God because we expect Him to show up in all His glory. We don’t recognize God because He shows up covered in skin. Jesus said it this way in Matthew 13:
“”The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.” (Matthew 13:44 NIV)
Many times God shows up, but we can’t see Him because we only see the field. We don’t see the treasure that is hidden inside of people. When God is going to show up, He is going to be represented by a person who comes into your life, and in order to pull the treasure out from inside of them, you’re going to have to look past the field and recognize it.
The great philosopher George Strait says it best in his song “I Saw God Today”
“His fingerprints are everywhere,
I just look down and stop and stare,
open my eyes and then I swear,
I Saw God Today.”
So have you been in the presence of God lately and haven’t known it? Has God shown up in your life but you didn’t recognize Him? Look past the field and start seeing the treasure.
