Revelation not Information

People come from all over to conferences that certain organizations, churches, or ministries put on in order that they might discover their secret to success. People today will be the first to buy the newest “How To” or “Ten Step” book. This is because we believe that there is a certain recipe or formula that will guarantee success.

Whenever Perry Noble, Senior Pastor of NewSpring Church, is asked the secret to why NewSpring has been so successful he says “Listen to Jesus and do what He says.” Not exactly the answer the people who ask that question are looking for. The reason is because they are looking for information rather than revelation. When all you do is look for information, you take God out of the equation. It’s a whole lot easier to go to a conference or read a book than it is to get on your face and seek God for the answer.

No where in the Bible do we see any secret recipe or formula. God told Moses to strike the rock the first time in order to get water, but the second time God told Moses to speak to the rock. The only time God told Joshua how to conquer a city by walking around the walls was Jericho. Even Jesus never healed someone the same way.

Look what it says in Samuel:

“Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head. David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them. “I cannot go in these,” he said to Saul, “because I am not used to them.” So he took them off. Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.” (1 Samuel 17:38-40 NIV84)

What worked for Saul didn’t work for David. If David would have tried to use what Saul had used, he would have never defeated Goliath. There was no “How To” or “Ten Step” giant killing book David could have read that would have helped him. There was no giant killing conference that David could have gone to in order to find the answer. The reason why David killed Goliath was because he got a revelation from God.

Stop thinking that the secret to success is found in a book or at a conference. Quit thinking that what worked for someone else is going to work for you. Get on your face and seek after God.
