Since it being Easter, I figured it would be fitting to write about 3 stones mentioned in the Bible that were rolled away.
The first one is found in Daniel 6:17. Daniel had been thrown in the lion’s den, a stone was rolled in the entrance way, and sealed in order that it would not be moved. After being in the lion’s den all night, the king came first thing in the morning and rolled the stone away in order to see if Daniel’s God had saved him. As the story goes, God had sent an angel to shut the lion’s mouth and saved Daniel.
The second instance is found in John 11:38-41. Here we find the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. Lazarus had been put in a tomb and a stone had been rolled in front of the entrance. When Jesus showed up, He had them roll the stone away, He then called out to Lazarus, and Lazarus came forth out of the tomb.
The third and final account of a stone being rolled away is the story of Jesus’ resurrection that we celebrate today. All four Gospels record this occurrence. Matthew writes “And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it.” (See Matthew 28:2 ESV) Mark records it like this “And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back—it was very large.” (See Mark 16:4 ESV) Luke has it written like this “And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.” (See Luke 24:2 ESV) And John writes “Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.” (See John 20:1 ESV)
Just like how God shut the mouths of the lions for Daniel, Jesus shut the mouth of death, Hell, and the grave. Paul says it this way “When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” (See 1 Corinthians 15:54, 55 ESV) Thank God that the stone is rolled away. Thank God that Jesus conquered death so we don’t have to live in fear. Thank God that Jesus rose victorious so that we don’t have to live in defeat.
If you feel like your situation has been put in the tomb, that it has been permanently sealed, and there is no hope for your circumstances to change, I want to let you know that the stone has been rolled away. If you feel like you dream has died and has been put in the tomb never to be visited again, the stone has been rolled away. If you think because of the darkness of your past that your future can’t be bright, the stone has been rolled away. No matter what your situation, no matter what your circumstances, no matter what your past; THE STONE HAS BEEN ROLLED AWAY!
