Dead Man Walking

Those of you who have seen the movie “The Green Mile” will remember the scene where the prison guard is leading the prisoner, who is on death row, through the prison. While the prison guard is leading the prisoner, he repeats this one phrase “dead man walking” in order to remind everyone of who the prisoner is and to humiliate the prisoner.

This scene depicts for us how we are in this life. Paul writes in Ephesians “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.” (See Ephesians 2:1-7 ESV)

We are all dead men walking, on death row; but Jesus took the death penalty for us so in Him, we who were once dead, are now alive. Just like the prison guard, the enemy wants to remind everyone and us who we are. He wants to let everyone know that they are just dead men walking. But I want to remind you of what Acts 17:28 says “for In him we live and move and have our being.”

We are all like the blind man from John 9. He was born blind, but when Jesus comes along, he receives his sight. When questioned about what happened, he says “I was blind, but now I see.” (See John 9:25) Before Jesus we were dead, but because of Jesus we are alive. Our response to the enemy and whoever else that questions us should be, just like the blind man, I was dead, but now I’m alive.

The song “All Because of Jesus” by Fee says it best. Let these lyrics minister to you and remind you of who you really are in Jesus.

Giver of every breath I breathe
Author of all eternity
Giver of every perfect thing
To You be the glory

Maker of heaven and of earth
No one can comprehend your worth
King over all the universe
To You be the glory

I’m alive
Because I’m alive in You

And it’s all because of Jesus I’m alive
And it’s all because the blood of Jesus Christ
That covers me and raised this dead man’s life
It’s all because of Jesus I’m alive, I’m alive, I’m alive

And it’s all because of Jesus I’m alive
And it’s all because the blood of Jesus Christ
That covers me and raised this dead man’s life
It’s all because of Jesus

Every sunrise sings Your praise
The universe cries out your praise
I’m singing freedom all my days
Now that I’m alive

It’s all because of Jesus I’m alive
It’s all because the blood of Jesus Christ
Covers me and raised this dead man’s life
Yeah, it’s all because of Jesus
It’s all because of Jesus I’m alive
It’s all because of the blood of Jesus Christ
Covers me and raised this dead man’s life
It’s all because of Jesus I’m alive, I’m alive, I’m alive
I’m alive, I’m alive (alive, alive)

And it’s all (it’s all, it’s all)
(Because of you) because of you
(It’s all, it’s all)
Because of you, yeah
It’s all (it’s all, it’s all)
(Because of you) because of you
It’s all (it’s all, it’s all)
(Because of you, because of you)
It’s all (it’s all, it’s all)
Because of you, yeah
It’s all (it’s all, it’s all)
(Because of you) because of you

So no longer be dead men walking, but let Jesus raise you up and give you life.
