Garth Brooks sings a song called “Standing Outside the Fire.” There is a line in the song that says “Life is not tried, it’s just merely survived. Standing outside the fire.”
So many times in life we encounter a storm, trial, tough circumstance or situation and we want God to come save us and take us out of it. Where in fact, in order to get better, improve, move on, and get to the next level; you can’t stand outside the fire but you have to pass through the flames.
In order for gold to be purified and get rid of all imperfections, it must be put through the fire. The same applies for us in life. In order for us to be made pure, we must have all our imperfections burned off of us. Read Daniel 3, where God didn’t save Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego from the furnace; but they had to go through the fire. Just like these three Hebrew boys, when we pass through the fire, we have this promise “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you.” (Isaiah 43:2 NKJV)
Perry Noble, Senior Pastor from NewSpring Church, made two great points about this story of the furnace in Daniel 3. The first was in order for them to see Jesus more clearly, they had to get in the fire. And the fire got hotter before things got better for them. The second was the only thing that got burned off of them in the fire was what the enemy had put on them in order to keep them bound and tied up.
So if you’re not seeing Jesus clearly maybe it’s because you are still standing outside the fire and need to get in the midst of it. Or maybe you feel bound, tied up, or held back and the only thing that will get you loose is for you to pass through the flames.
So don’t ask God to save you from the fire. Instead step inside it, where Jesus is, and He will see you through to the other side. Don’t get held back any longer and don’t just merely survive, pass through the flames where you can come out on the other side pure as gold.
