When I first moved to South Carolina, I had no clue where anything was located. So for the first year, I had to rely on directions off of the Internet, from family, or friends. Sometimes the directions would be spot on and other times they would get me lost and I would end up in the middle of nowhere.
But something happened that changed all of that. My grandfather got me a GPS navigational system for Christmas. This was the best gift that I could have received. Now instead of relying solely on other people’s directions, I would just plug the address into the GPS and it would take me to my destination. Now when I take a wrong turn, I don’t have to rely on myself or anyone else to get me back on track. I have the GPS right there with me that will recalculate in order to get me back on my path so that I will reach my destination.
I believe God is the same as my GPS. He already has our destination plugged in before we are even born. He is right there with us guiding us step by step. Even when we take a wrong turn or get off track, He recalculates in order to get us back on our path. God never changes your destination or purpose, He just realigns your path in order that you still get to where you’re suppose to be. Nothing you can do or anyone else can do will stop you from reaching God’s destination for you. Paul says it this way “In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will.” (See Ephesians 1:11 NKJV) You can only be slowed down, hindered, or delayed but you can never be denied, shut down, or stopped.
Look at Joseph. God purposed for him to be the prince of Egypt in order that he might save his family. He was sold into slavery by his brothers, thrown into prison, and forgotten about; but he still reached the purpose God had for him. Check out Peter. He rebukes and denies Jesus, but he still makes it to the day of Pentecost where he preaches and 3,000 people are saved. Even Paul was persecuting and killing Christians, but he still ends up writing two thirds of the New Testament.
I want to encourage someone who is reading this that thinks, because of what they have done and because of some wrong turns they made along the way, that God can’t recalculate in order for them to still reach their destination. Others of you have been hindered, hurt, delayed, and even slowed up by other people in your life and you believe that there’s no way God can work it out. But the same Paul that wrote Ephesians 1:11 also writes this “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” (See Romans 8:28 NKJV)
The only problem is that we are still relying on the world’s directions, still seeking guidance from family, and asking advice from friends. Just like I did before I received my GPS, we end up getting lost and never reaching our destination. Many times, like I did, we give up on reaching our destination and go back to where we started. But when you receive Jesus as your Savior; you get God’s GPS, the Holy Spirit; who is always with you, guiding you step by step, and who never fails in getting you to your destination.
So quit relying on your own understanding and the world’s directions. Put your trust in God and know that He who started you on your way will make sure that you reach the destination that He purposed for you all along.
