After Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead, He commands the people to take off the grave-clothes and let him go (See John 11:44). Lazarus was alive but he was still wrapped up in dead things. The New King James Version translates this verse “Loose him, and let him go.”
Jesus said that He is the resurrection and life (See John 11:25) and that He has come so that we can have life more abundantly (See John 10:10). You can’t live this life if you are still carrying around dead things. You can’t be truly alive if you haven’t taken off the grave-clothes that are tying you down or holding you back. Jesus came to loose us off these dead things and let us go free. Paul tells us that anyone who is in Christ is a new creation; the old things have passed away, all things have been made new (See 2 Corinthians 5:17). Your old habits, your old relationships, your old attitudes, your old circumstances, your old situations have all died and you can’t hold on to them any more. You got to take them off or they won’t let you live.
Paul tells us in Romans 7:21-25 that he is alive inwardly but he is still carrying around a dead body. He is alive through the Spirit but he is still carrying around death through the flesh. Paul asks the question “Who will deliver me from this body of death?” Paul is referring to a particular form of Roman execution. When someone killed another person, they would take the dead body, tie it to the person, and they would have to carry it around with them until eventually the dead body would end up killing them. Being around dead things, carrying dead things, or coming in contact with dead things will ultimately choke out, erode, and kill the life that Jesus intended for you to live. The only way to survive is to have the dead body cut off. Jesus said it this way “Deny yourself, take up your cross daily, and follow Him” (See Luke 9:23). You have to cut away the selfish desires daily or they will wind up killing you.
So what dead things are you carrying around with you? What is it in your life that you need to take off? What dead thing in your life needs to be cut off? Take it off, cut if away, and start living today the life Jesus gave His life up for.
