At small group a few weeks ago, our discussion revolved around Psalm 23:4 “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.” We started discussing how NewSpring’s Fuse Pastor, Brad Cooper, mentioned how when death shows up it only shows up as a shadow. I started to think about the different verses in the Bible that mention the word shadow. God revealed to me something very profound and powerful:
David goes on to mention further that whoever dwells in the secret place of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty (See Psalm 91:1). Imagine being so close to God that wherever He goes you are right there under His shadow. Now in Acts 5:15, the people would bring the sick into the streets, lay them on beds and mats in order that they might be healed when Peter passed by and his shadow fell on them. I believe that if people can be healed when a man’s shadow falls on them, how much more will be done when God’s shadow falls on you. I don’t care what you’re going through all things are possible with God (See Mark 10:27). If you stay in the presence of God, His shadow will fall on you and you will be healed, you will be set free, you will never be the same.
Now when I was a little boy, my shadow wasn’t very big at all. I remember when I was walking with my Father and how his shadow was much larger than mine. When I walked close enough to my Father, his shadow would cover up my shadow. Let’s go back to Psalm 23:4, the reason why David said he would fear no evil when death’s shadow showed up in the valley, is because God was with him. David knew that he didn’t have to fear because God’s shadow would swallow up death’s shadow. Paul said it this way in I Corinthians 15:54-57 “Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
I don’t know where you are in life. You might be going through the valley. I want to encourage you that as long as you are with God, the shadow of sickness might show up but God’s shadow will consume it. The shadow of poverty might show up but God’s shadow will swallow it. The shadow of fear might show up but God’s shadow will overcome it. The shadow of doubt might show up but God’s shadow will cover it up. The shadow of death might show up but God’s shadow will destroy it. Whatever shadow might show up be confident that God’s shadow is greater and will be victorious over it.
