I was driving back home after having lunch with a friend this past Thursday, when God reminded me of the verse in Isaiah 59:19 that says “The enemy comes in like a flood but the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him.”
I began to think about that scripture, immediately, I was brought back to the children of Israel crossing the Jordan River. As I looked at that story there is a few things I found that tie in with the verse in Isaiah.
In Joshua 3:14, we see that before the people crossed the Jordan the priests carrying the ark of the covenant went first. Now the ark of the covenant was where God dwelled. In order for the people to cross over, God had to go first. In other words, if you don’t put God first in every situation in your life, when the enemy comes to destroy you there will be nothing to prevent him from overcoming you. Thank God that Jesus came in order that we may have life more abundantly (See John 10:10).
Second, at this particular time the Jordan was at flood stage. The priests had to step out in faith while the water was still flowing. As soon as the priests’ feet touched the water’s edge, the water from upstream stopped flowing. Now the place upstream where the water piled up was a great distance away, so the priests had no clue that God had already stopped the flow of the river (See Joshua 3:15-17). Sometimes God is waiting for us to trust Him and step out on faith into the water instead of waiting for the water to stop before we cross over. We have to trust God that He is working on our behalf, doing what He promised He would do even though we can’t see it.
Lastly, the Jordan was the only thing that was separating the children of Israel from stepping into the Promise Land that God had given them. I heard Apostle Ron Carpenter say that whatever area the enemy attacks you in life that is the area he fears the most about you. So sometimes the enemy will come in like a flood to try and prevent you from your breakthrough, from God’s promises, from God’s blessings. And it might look like he’s prevailing because you can’t see that God has already cut him off a great distance away upstream. I just want to tell you and encourage you that he might delay what God has for you but just wait because the Spirit of the Lord is coming to raise a standard against him. Remember the battle is not your’s it’s the Lord’s and anyone or anything that comes against the purpose and calling God has for you is not fighting with you but with God. And no person, no thing, not even you can’t stop what God has purposed, promised, or blessed in your life.
