To Him Who Overcomes

Jesus said that in this world we would have trouble, we would have hardship, we would have struggles but to not fear, to not be afraid, don’t worry for He has overcome the world (See John 16:33). In a sense when you only read the first part of that verse, it is not very encouraging. Thank God He put a “but” in there to tell us that everything that was mentioned before doesn’t matter cause I have overcome it. God doesn’t just remind us that He has overcome but in Revelation 12:11 He shows us how we can also overcome. God calls us overcomers (1 John 2:13-14), He tells us how to overcome evil (Romans 12:21), reminds us that greater is the One who is in us than the one who is in the world (1 John 4:4), He says we have victory in Christ (1 Corinthians 15:57), He calls us more than conquerors (Romans 8:37), and tells us that whoever is born of God overcomes the world (1 John 5:4). How amazing is God’s promises. When knowing them it puts a whole new perspective of Romans 8:31 “If God is for us, who can be against us?” In studying the seven churches that Jesus writes to in Revelation 2-3, we see that there are seven promises for the person who overcomes.

Promise #1

In Revelation 2:7, Jesus tells the church in Ephesus to him who overcomes, He will give the right to eat from the tree of life. This is the promise of everlasting life and to be with Jesus in paradise.

Promise #2

Revelation 2:11 tells us that the second death will not hurt us. I love how the Message translates this verse “Are your ears awake? Listen. Listen to the Wind Words, the Spirit blowing through the churches. Christ-conquerors are safe from Devil-death.”

Promise #3

Jesus tells the church in Pergamum that he who overcomes will receive some of the hidden manna and will be given a white stone with a new name written on it (Revelation 2:17). Manna translated literally means “what it is,” So I believe Jesus is going to give us whatever it is that we need when we see him face to face. Paul alludes to this in I Corinthians 13 when he says “For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then shall I know fully, even as I am fully known.”

Promise #4

In Revelation 2:26-29, Jesus tells the church in Thyatira that he who overcomes will be given authority over the nations and give him the morning star.

Promise #5

Jesus tells the church in Sardis that the one who overcomes will walk with Him dressed in white and that their names will never be blotted out of the book of life (Revelation 3:5-6). This is such an amazing promise that we will walk with Jesus and our names will be written in the book of life forever.

Promise #6

In Revelation 3:12-13, Jesus says the one who overcomes “I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will he leave it. I will write on him the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on him my new name.” This promise tells us that we will never be separated from the presence of God again and that Jesus is going to put his signature on us showing everyone that we belong to Him.

Promise #7

Jesus tells the church in Laodicea that he who overcomes will be given the right to sit with Him on His throne, just as He overcame and sat down with His Father on His throne. This promise is so amazing that we will be able to do what Jesus did, sit down with Him on His throne and reign with Him forever.

If you have not heard the new song by Hillsong United “Take Heart” I suggest you buy the album or download the song. Here are a few of the lyrics, I hope that in whatever you are going through these words encourage you as they have me.

All our troubles
And all our tears
God our hope
He has overcome

All our failure
And all our fear
God our love
He has overcome
All our heartache
And all our pain
God our healer
He has overcome

All our burdens
And all our shame
God our freedom
He has overcome

God our justice
God our grace
God our freedom
He has overcome

God our refuge
God our strength
God is with us
He has overcome
